Occupational Health & Safety is still an emerging filed in Sri Lanka where history of occupational health and safety in Sri Lanka extends as far back as 1896, with the enactment of the Mines and Machinery Protection Ordinance. However, a large number of organizations do not provide any such services. Small and medium sized industries are hardly concerned with occupational health and safety. Most of the times large scale industries, especially multinational organizations, have ensured the establishment of occupational health and safety activities in their organizations. ILO estimate that In Sri Lanka about 4,000 accidents are being reported yearly and the number of working days lost due to accidents is estimated to be around 600,000 workdays every year. With the expansion of economy in the country, the focus on occupational health & safety is vital to achieve the sustainable economic development and reduce in direct impact do GDP because of work related accidents.

What is WSHA?

WSHA is a pure non-profit organization registered under Section 34 of the Companies Act of Sri Lanka as a Guarantee Limited Company. The Association is made up of practicing professionals in local and multi-national organizations in Sri Lanka and functions as an independent industry body.
